Anup Sridhar declared Vodafone Player of the Tie

Pune, August 23, 2013: It was Pune’s day from the beginning when Anup Sridhar set the tone by winning against Hu Yun of Banga Beats in two straight matches. In no time, Women’s Singles, both Men’s Doubles were also pocketed by Pune. Mixed Doubles was the only win for Banga Beats where they beat Pune Pistons 20-21 21-14 11-8.

Anup Sridhar was declared the Vodafone Player of the Tie. Elated, he said, “It was sweet to win own match and then see the team win too. When I get into my rhythm, I can be quite dangerous.”

Commenting on the win he said, “I don’t think I played my best game but a few shots really helped me win the match. My strategy was to keep the shuttle down. I love Pune crowd, they are simply awesome. We need this spirit to go on till the end of the League.”

Winning the mixed doubles for Banga Beats, Carston Mogensen said, “We both knew that it is going to be a tough match especially when Pune Pistons were leading as a team. We just tried to smile and enjoyed the crowd. Our win was more of a concerted team effort.”

Post her win Schenk said, “I have been trying to give my best to the League from the beginning. I knew today’s match was tough competition and therefore I had prepared myself well in advance. This planning helped me win over Carolina.”

Winning the Men’s doubles Kiong Tan Wee said, “It was a very close match and there were many critical moments but I was confident of our partnership. The support from the team and ofcourse the crowd here at Pune was amazing. I am confident that I will continue the momentum of my game till the end of the League.”

Elated at the win, Saurabh said, “After the first game I tried to play aggressive. Also took advantage of Kashyap missing some of the crucial shots. The advice from coaches during intervals helped me a lot and made me win back to back games. “

The $1-million Vodafone Indian Badminton League started on August 14, 2013, with some high-voltage action. The 2013 IBL will feature six franchises and will run for 18 days. Each franchise will host a two-day leg and the League will showcase a grand total of 90 matches, providing broadcasters and in-stadia spectators with more than 100 hours of LIVE “family entertainment” which will also be viewed by a significant international audience. The matches will be held during late afternoon and evening to coincide with prime time television and providing a convenient time for the stadium audience.

The top four franchises in the Vodafone IBL will clash in the semi-finals and the winners will meet in the grand final on August 31, which will be played in Mumbai, for the richest prize money tournament in badminton till now.
