Ajay Jayaram wins Vodafone Player of the Tie

Mumbai, August 19, 2013: The 1st day of Mumbai Leg in the path-breaking Vodafone IBL witnessed a thrilling match between Saina Nehwal and Juliane Schenk wherein the former kept her nerves and won a very close match which lasted for almost an hour.

In the Men’s singles category both the Hotshots men’s singles players won their match convincingly against the Pistons. While Ajay Jayaram beat Nyugen Tien in the first Men’s singles, in the second Men’s singles Minh S Tanongsak won against Saurabh Varma. In the Men’s doubles V Shem Goh and KW Lim had an easy win over R Kumar and Sanave Thomas.

 

It was only in the Mixed Doubles that Pune Pistons had a convincing win over Hyderabad Headshots hence giving them the 1 win today.

 

Post her win Saina said “this wasn’t the first time that I have beaten Schenk. She gives me a tough time each time we have played and this time too, the match was close and tough. But I am happy that I won and that too in India”..

Speaking on the 4 games won by Hotshots Saina said “the win of 4 games today over Pistons will help us go up the points table and this will come into counting while we approach the semi finals. Hence each point counts for us and I am happy by each one’s performance against the Pistons today”.

Speaking during the post match conference Saina said “Schenk was fast in the first game, I realized line judgments went against me. I started playing aggressively and by the end of 3rd round she was very tired. The team is in great form and the feeling is really satisfying to sit on the top of the points table and beating Pistons who were leading the table till earlier today. I feel the Indian players should get support and this will uplift the sport in India”.

Post his win Ajay Jayaram said “I lost to Tien last year and at the back of mind I had the pressure to win this game. I am very happy to have won this match in front of the Mumbai crowd as this is my hometown. I am elated and hoping to keep this form for my next game.”

Post their win the Men’s Doubles duo said “it was an easy win for us and we are happy that we won and took our team to a 3-0 lead over Pune Pistons. We really like Saina and did not want to let her down keeping in mind the fight she gave to Schenk today and won the match, hence we ensured that we win this game.”

Post the win S Tanongsak said “This was my first match against Saurabh and my strategy was to play aggressively from beginning. I gave my best to the game and Saurabh put up a good fight. I am very happy that I have been able to add to the team point tally.”

Speaking on the mixed doubles win JF Nielsen said “it was a disappointing day for us. We have to sit and rethink our strategy and we hope to a comeback in Pune”

Speaking on their win Ashwini said “we are playing well together and while I am not happy with today’s results but I am trying to contribute as much as possible by winning our matches”.

Krrish Delhi Smashers Vs Mumbai Masters– 8pm

The $1-million Vodafone Indian Badminton League started on August 14, 2013, with some high-voltage action. The 2013 IBL will feature six franchises and will run for 18 days. Each franchise will host a two-day leg and the League will showcase a grand total of 90 matches, providing broadcasters and in-stadia spectators with more than 100 hours of LIVE “family entertainment” which will also be viewed by a significant international audience. The matches will be held during late afternoon and evening to coincide with prime time television and providing a convenient time for the stadium audience.

The top four franchises in the Vodafone IBL will clash in the semi-finals and the winners will meet in the grand final on August 31, which will be played in Mumbai, for the richest prize money tournament in badminton till now.
