Awadhe Warriors wins against Pune Pistons by 3-2 on the first day of Hyderabad Leg

P. V Sindhu wins Vodafone Player of the Tie

Hyderabad, August 18, 2013: The 1st day of the Hyderabad Leg in the path-breaking Vodafone IBL saw intense competition between both the teams. Awadhe Warriors won against Pune Pistons by 3-2 here at Hyderabad today.

Earlier in the day, in the Women’s singles category P. V Sindhu won the match in straight sets beating Pune Pistons Juliane Schenk. All the three matches in the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Men’s doubles were won by Awadhe Warriors in straight sets. Pune Pistons came back well and won the second Men’s Singles and Mixed Doubles tie. Both Awadhe Warriors and Pune Pistons secured their place in Semi-Finals.

Post their win Ashwini Ponnappa said “Fischer is very experienced player and keep correcting my mistakes. I am glad that my team worked very hard together to qualify for the semis. As far as my game is concerned, I couldn’t have played better than this.”

In the Men’s singles K. Srikanth won the tie and said, “I had a very good start and I think this was my kind of style. Shuttle speed was much better than Bangalore which helped me to win the game.”

P. V. Sindhu, Vodafone Player of the Tie said, “I have played against Schenk twice but this is the first time I won the game and am feeling really happy. Also I am thrilled and touched to see my college friends and teachers who have come here to support me.”

Post their win Mathias Boe said “It was another day at office. I and Kido were leading by 4 or 5 points throughout the match today and had complete control on our game. Also there was no point when we were under pressure.”

Post his win Tien Minh Nyugen said “I am very happy that my team qualified for semi-finals after I won the match today. One side of the court was slow and the other one was very fast. I tried keeping the shuttle down all the time so that I can win as many points as possible to win the match.”

Hyderabad Hotshots Vs Banga Beats – 6pm

The $1-million Vodafone Indian Badminton League started on August 14, 2013, with some high-voltage action. The 2013 IBL will feature six franchises and will run for 18 days. Each franchise will host a two-day leg and the League will showcase a grand total of 90 matches, providing broadcasters and in-stadia spectators with more than 100 hours of LIVE “family entertainment” which will also be viewed by a significant international audience. The matches will be held during late afternoon and evening to coincide with prime time television and providing a convenient time for the stadium audience.

The top four franchises in the Vodafone IBL will clash in the semi-finals and the winners will meet in the grand final on August 31, which will be played in Mumbai, for the richest prize money tournament in badminton till now.
