Awadhe Warriors Win over Mumbai Masters 3-2

Sindhu announced Vodafone Player of the Tie

Bangalore, August 24, 2013: The battle between Awadhe Warriors and Mumbai Masters finally swung in favor of Lucknow when Markis Kido hit the final stroke to win the mixed doubles 21-19 21-15 for the team.

All the five matches played today at Bangalore were close wins for either team with even Lee Chong Wei losing one set to Srikanth before claiming victory in the match. While Mumbai Masters won both the men’s singles, Awadhe Warriors pocketed the other three to win the Tie 3-2.

P V Sindhu was declared the Vodafone Player of the Tie. Excited at the win, Sindhu said, “I have played three or four matches against Tine Baun but this is the first time I have won from her. There were very good rallies and each and every point was important for both of us. I was feeling very low after 17-14 in the second game but the crowd support helped me keep the energy going on. Thank you Bangalore.”

Markis Kido said, “We have been playing together for quite some time now and there is good coordination between us. Our earlier win at IBL had boost our spirits. Ours is surely a winning combo.”

Post his win Vladimir Ivanov said, “It was a difficult match for me. I could not control the shuttle because the speed was very fast. Playing from near the net really helped me win the game.”

Speaking after winning the match, Mathias Boe said, “I and Kido had a very good start. The challenge I found today was the shuttle speed but together we overcame it. Though I am enjoying back to back matches, but I have started missing home because I have been away for more than a month now.”

Giving away the secret of his wins, Lee Chong Wei said, “I have been playing for more than 8years now and all that I have learnt is to win every game. There cannot be another result. The crowd here is amazing. I just love their enthusiasm.”

The $1-million Vodafone Indian Badminton League started on August 14, 2013, with some high-voltage action. The 2013 IBL will feature six franchises and will run for 18 days. Each franchise will host a two-day leg and the League will showcase a grand total of 90 matches, providing broadcasters and in-stadia spectators with more than 100 hours of LIVE “family entertainment” which will also be viewed by a significant international audience. The matches will be held during late afternoon and evening to coincide with prime time television and providing a convenient time for the stadium audience.

The top four franchises in the Vodafone IBL will clash in the semi-finals and the winners will meet in the grand final on August 31, which will be played in Mumbai, for the richest prize money tournament in badminton till now.
