Badminton is ready for a big take-off in Delhi. Come August 14, the Capital, which has a penchant for keeping tryst with history and has hosted two Asian Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games, will launch the path-breaking Indian Badminton League (IBL).

The megapolis houses two state-of-the-art badminton facilities – the Siri Fort DDA Badminton & Squash Stadium and the historic IG Stadium – which match the best in the league. The presence of modern infrastructure and professional coaching facilities has sparked a never-seen before craze for badminton, and currently there are more than a hundred badminton academies honing the skills of thousands of aspiring talent in the national capital region. No surprises therefore that the Delhi Smashers are one of the six teams featuring in the inaugural chapter of the path-breaking IBL.

Delhi boasts of a rich legacy in badminton and several legends have honed their skills in the badminton courts teeming across the megapolis. It is the home to former Asian Champion in men’s singles and bronze medalist in the Commonwealth Games, Dinesh Khanna, the multi-talented Madhumita Bisht, who won the National titles several times in women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles and the Asiad bronze medalist in the singles, and several National-level players.

Siri Fort will host three IBL League Ties from August 14-15 while the IG Stadium will witness the grand Opening Ceremony of the IBL featuring international and star cast on August 13. Delhi Smashers will launch their campaign against arch-rivals, Mumbai Masters on August 15. The Delhi Smashers will be cheered by thousands of badminton-loving children from 16 schools in Delhi NCR which are part of the IBL School Programme. The Smashers’ ‘IBL School Partner’ are the prestigious school, Genesis Global School, Expressway – the school has one of the best badminton infrastructures in India and recently hosted a Badminton Clinic for 12 schools in Delhi NCR with Commonwealth Games women doubles champion Jwala Gutta.

Keep cheering and supporting the Delhi Smashers!
